It is folder where FP will store "unpbublshed" pages if you use certain
FP features in website that has FPSE.

For example, if you creat a fedback form to recve comments, and you
choose to srore on the web, fp will sore the reults in a fiel in htis
folder. and that's where you (in private) look for it to read the comments.

When I try to access the files in _private through FrontPage 2003 or Explorer
something happens at the server where only I cannot get to the domain after
touching anything in _private. All of my neighbors and friends can access
the domain through their client but for some reason I cannot. I ran a
tracert to the domain and it will time out before reaching the destination.
What is going on? I call my hosting server they do something and then I am
a-Ok again until I go and try to read a file. My hosting service is gonna
hate me after a while....

This is the 3rd time doing it so yes I included in my trouble ticket to my
hosting company that I am putting the files in another directory. I am new
to FrontPage so I am not sure how to secure the data now. Not that _private
is very secure anyway.

Thanks for your help

Private is extremely secure and can only be accessed by someone who has the user
name and password to the domain.

Are you trying to change permissions on the _private folder by any chance??
If so, "Don't."

Let FrontPage manage the permissions on the _private folder.

Well, couple of caveats here. As long as you use FrontPage rather than FTP
to publish, the _private folder permissions will be well-managed by
FrontPage. In addition, on an Apache server, any folder with a leading
underscore is hidden from browsing. If the web is uploaded via FTP, and the
web is on a Windows server, it may not be secure.

I have the same basic problem. I'm using FP2003 to design, maintain and
publish my website. I had several of my forms storing (confidential)
information inside files located in the "_private" folder. That is, until I
realized that all I had to do is type "www.myaddress.com/_private" from my
browser and get a nice listing of all of the files located in that directory.
I was shocked to see that information that I had thought to be secure was
right there in front of me and it could be seen by anyone who knew how to get
to it. I've tried this from two different computers in my house.

I have since temporarty removed that form information and am relying on the
information to be forwarded via e-mail instead.

What can I do to fix this problem?

By default, the folder is supposed to be private and can't be accessed
without a password.
Something is wrong on the remote web. You need to contact your host to
properly set the permissions.
