Chris

I am in desperate need of some help here.
Halloween weekend I had around 20 GB of Spam traffic go through my
server.

I am running 2000 Server with the default SMTP server that comes with
IIS 5.0

The messages seemed to be the same messages coming from different IP
addresses and addressed to different recipients and being relayed
through my server.

I have tried adjusting the settings to stop the spam, which I end up
accomplishing but I end up not allowing any legitimate email through
also.

If some one could tell me what settings I should have I would really
appreciate it.

Thanks in advance,

Chris Dowsett

are you talking about exchange or the SMTP service that come with w2k ?
if you are talking about the SMTP service that got installed when you made
a dc and you have no additional sites your can remove that service. also
block at firewall incoming traffic on port 25 to your server (if you have no
mail service on your server )

That's a good point... if you aren't really using the SMTP service to send
and receive email, then you should disable the SMTP service.

You're right, I was sloppy, missed the version numbers curiously at the
bottom of the article. Thanks...

That's not what I meant. I was actually trying to make a joke about
the fact that he should be looking at an article showing how to
*prevent* rather than configure SMTP relaying.

And in doing so, I completely missed the version numbers at the bottom
of the KB article as well....

Doh !!! ;-)
