Please help me select a printer / fax

I have a small bagel shop/restaurant and need some help.

I need only b&w printing.

I need to group fax once per day, (my specials menu) to about twenty
other faxes. I need to receive a few faxes a day, some hand written.
(So I feel I MUST have a physical fax machine.)

I currently use MS Works to make my menu, and fax it using the provided
software.

I have an 2-year old HP all-in-one which I hate. It will fax to a few
of the numbers, then freeze. Re-booting sometimes will work, sometimes
not, but either way, it takes more time than I care to give it.

If I click on the log to see what went and what didn't, the software
freezes on the spot.

I have cable for internet service and a phone line for the faxing.

Should I get a stand-alone fax with group function and a stand-alone
printer? My budget would be in the 4-5 hundred dollar range.

What makes and models shold I be looking at?

I should have mentioned that my current machine is a 5110 Officejet, and
I have heard of multiple problems with these.

PC magazine has just done a review pf multifnction printers. I think

I suggest you look at internet faxing from your PC with something
like efax. They can serve as a FAX receiver, also.

I'm down on multifunction machines for many reasons. For one thing,
if you need a big fast printer and occasional Faxes you get too much
of one or not enough of the other capability.

When one part breaks the whole thing may be down for service, the same
goes for replacement/upgrade. You've got yo upgrade the whole kit.

The software is bloated.

If you only fax a few pages a cheap flatbed scanner (under $100) comes
with scan/fax/print software that uses your PC and works just fine.
There are Fax machines that take up very little desk space when not
being used, are easy to move and can be connected to any of several
computer via USB.

For printing AIO printers are rareley the cheapest cost per page.
 
Hi there.

Why not just a decent Fax Program for your computer, and also a reasonable
Printer, or go the other way and get a Plain Paper Fax Machine, which will
work without any kind of computer link, and some of them can broadcast (Fax
to a group of numbers).

I send and receive faxes, via phone dial up, using the fairly basic Fax
program which comes as part of Office XP. It will quite happily receive
handwritten Faxes, and my Epson 1290 Photo Printer will print them.

The Fax Program which came with Office 2000 was rather too basic to be of
much use, but the CD I got with my Modem included a very comprehensive if
complex Fax Program. There are a fair selection of Fax Programs available,
and you probably just need a fairly basic one.

Yes, you need a physical fax only machine. So you get a paper copy of
everything, which is pretty much what you want.

You'll see paper in the fax output bin, pick it up and read it and act
on it.

You might consider sending your bulk faxes from your PC with a software
program and a modem.

You might be happier with a group capable physical fax.

Can you call some similar businesses way across town or even in a
different town to find someone who has something he/she is really happy
with. You can get the out of town phone numbers from Yellow Pages
Directories in the library, or even on line.


I long ago stopped using my multifunction fax as anything except a stand
alone fax only machine. Wiped out all that ugly terrible
fax/printer/scanner software and have been happy as a clam.

A Stand Alone is always better. As for a printer, look at the Brother
Laser printers. They are not expensive.
