I am using XP home. Norton's reports the OS as Windows: 5.1 (Build 2600)
Net Clients: Microsoft Terminal Services: Microsoft Windows Network: Web
Client Network. My telephone services provider has charged me for calls made
from my computer to a sex line which I have not made. Is there any log file
that I can check that would prove this not to be the case. I connect via a
cable but do have a fax modem connect to a spare telephone line for incoming
faxes. I have checked and there is no dialup connection in the network
settings folder. Can a machine dial out without a dial up connection being
set up? Would the operating system have recorded this action anywhere if a
dialup connection had been made remotely and then deleted?

You are in a rather tricky situation i'm afraid. It maybe that you have
inadvertantly downloaded a porn dialer and this is the culprit. I suggest
that you download Ad-Aware (www.lavasoft.com) and also SpyBot seacrh and
destroy (www.safer-networking.org) Both are excellent for spy ware and
Spybot can search for downloaded porn dialers. Log files can usually be
edited in notepad so, looking on the pessimistic side, your isp could always
suggest that a log file had been altered. Unfortunately their profit is more
important than your integrity.
You don't use a conventional modem so the modem log would be of no use and
the firewall log only logs internet traffic. Technically, with porn dialers,
you by pass your isp's dialup number and dial a premium rate number.
I'm sorry i can't be more helpful. But please download the software i have
suggested and check to see if a porn dialer has been installed. If spybot
finds it then you can at least delete it. You should also look at other
users of your pc.

Just to say thank you for your prompt reply.
