I have a wireless router (Lynksys) based setup at home to chare the NTL
broadband connection between 1 desktop and 1 laptop. I am moving house on
Friday and just discovered that I will not be able to have Broadband by NTL
or BT !

Is there a way I can still use my wireless setup on a 56k dial up
connection. Don't mind about sharing the connection, it is more about being
wireless. Can I for example have the Desktop linked to the phone point
using a 56k modem and also the same desktop linked to the router so that I
can access the same connection wirelessly? Or is this stupid? How can I do
wireless on a 56k dialup ! I am desperate !

Many thanks for any advice you could offer

You could find a 3Com LanModem (now discontinued, I believe, but there
may still be some info on their site, and you might be able to find one
on EBay or at the local thrift store) or equivalent. I used one for
years -- it was a great product, IMHO, and I believe it could be
configured to do what you want (although I never tried that particular
combination, so form your own conclusion).

New they sold for about $300, as I recall, but I've bought them used
for as little as about 10 bucks.

I just picked one up on computers4sure.com for $178 look for the 3com 56K
officeconnect LAN modem.

I don't see where that says it'll act as (or communicate via) a 56K
modem, though, which is what the OP is looking for.

or here for $176 on 1 search.

It seems to me that the simplest solution for you would be to install a
modem on your desktop computer and then use Internet Connection Sharing to
provide internet access to your laptop. You would have to dial-up from
your desktop before your wireless laptop would have access.

Another solution that I have used with good sucess is to use a wireless
router that has both the broadband and a serial connection. Then connect
the modem to the serial port. You could use either computer to dial-up
your ISP, using the router. The router I used is Zoom Telephonics 4165, no
longer sold, but I think the SMC 7004AWBR has the same capability.
