My system performance was stuttering, so i rebooted. On
loading windows XP check disk began running and found 2
bad clusters of name [null], it is now slowly checking the
rest of the drive.

I have data on here i do not want to lose. Can i reboot to
get back into the drive to backup the data? Or will
rebooting screw things up worse than letting it run
through?

PLEASE help!

Let it run. If the data was corrupted, it was corrupted before the disk
check started, you just didn't know about it.

When XP boots it asks if you want to run chkdsk.
If chkdsk runs all the time after boot up run when
prompted you have 10 seconds to stop chkdsk running press
enter.
This will load XP normally.
Run a dos prompt and type in chkdsk /d which should stop
this happening.
It's a well documented Microsoft bug.

You should still be able to go into windows and save all
your data and then you can get tools from maxter.com or
seagate.com which will analysis your hard disk and report
the errors.
