PLEASE HELP- CPU/Motherboard speed question

Hi

I've just built a system comprising:

Pentium 4 2.4GHz CPU (800MHz FSB)
MSI GNB Max-2 Motherboard (Intel E7205 Chipset), supports 533MHz or 400MHz
FSB CPU
512MB DDR 2700 Memory
ATA100 IDE Hard Drive (80GB)

The problem is that the CPU is only being recognised as a maximum of
1.58GHz, which is 133 * a multiplier ratio of 12.

I have installed the motherboard drivers & intel application accelerator,
but the BIOS still only lets me go up to a clock multiplier ratio of 12
(*133MHz).

The BIOS will only let me go up to 133MHz, even though it should do. Any
idaes what I can do?

Read your POST, about 20 lines up ^.
Notice that you wrote "CPU 800MHz", but then on the next line you
wrote "supports 533MHz or 400MHz"... See the problem?

800<>533

P4 is running quad-data-rate FSB... the "800MHz" you wrote, is a
200MHz FSB clock rate, quad-pumped ( X 4 ), = 800.

The motherboard however, supports max of 533MHz, actually 133MHz FSB,
quad-pumped, = 533MHz in quad-pumped-speak.

The CPU is a 2.4GHz speed at 200MHz FSB, so we can see:
2400MHz / 200MHz = 12X (multiplier).

The board, having a max FSB rate of 133MHz, can only run it at 133MHz
X 12 Multiplier = ~ 1.6GHz, which can deviate enough to account for
the speed you see with that CPU in that board.

You need to exchange just the CPU for the 533MHz FSB version,
- OR -
the motherboard for one that supports 200MHz, sometimes confusingly
called 800MHz, version, and PC3200 memory.

Obviously the motherboard and memory replacement would be faster, at
higher cost. Might be even more worthwhile if you wanted be able to
upgrade the CPU someday. On the other hand, with the system up and
running, OS installed, etc, it's a whole lot easier to just swap a
CPU (err, after you turn it off... had to write that or someone
somewhere would feel the need to point it out).

Your motherboard does not support 800mhz FSB. The website says it is only
400 and 533, not 800, that is if it is the one you linked to, which has the
845 chipset not the 7205 chipset. Didn't see a mother board with the 7205
chipset on the MSI site. If it is the 845pe chipset board your link points
to, the top speed it supports is 533, and your 800mhz 2.4 p4 will not run
at full speed on it. Get a different motherboard or processor.
