Out of the blue my cd/dvd driver stopped working. Every time I try running
the driver it states "e:\ is not accesible The request could not be performed
because of an I/O device error. I've tried updating the driver, and
uninstalling and then reinstalling the driver. Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.

With the computer unplugged, open the case (assuming this is a desktop)
and reseat the ribbon cable and power supply connector going to the
drive. Restart Windows. If the drive is seen, great. If not, test by:

1. Either booting with a rescue cd like Knoppix or Bart's PE to see if
the drive is seen there; or

2. Swap the drive out for a known-working one.

If the drive is still not seen in #1 then you know the drive has died.
If the known-working one is good in Windows, then you know the original
drive has died. Replace it.

You can also test the drive in another computer to make sure the problem
is with the drive and not your motherboard connector.

You stated that you're assuming that this is a desktop; it's actually on my
sony vaio laptop, does your suggestions still apply? I also don't know how to
reseat a ribbon cable. I also don't have a rescue cd, would I have to
purchade it? Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate it.

That is why giving a full description of the computer in the *first*
post is A Good Thing. Since you have a laptop, call Sony tech support
for repair/replacement. There are a few things that could be done to
test, but - and I'm not saying this to hurt your feelings - if you
don't know how to reseat a ribbon cable then your computer skills
aren't up to advanced troubleshooting.

This is probably failed hardware and you aren't going to be able to fix
this yourself.
