I'm not sure if this is related to my not being able to change colours, but
I also can't change the size of the page set up in the presentation. It
defaults to 1 inch wide by 7.

I'm using a lot of images
I read that the image resolution should be the same as my monitors
resolution, which is 1024. When I try to format the picture inside ppt, it
changes any image to black and Ilose the image. when I try to change colours
here in the properties dialogue, it changes it all to black.

when I try to save as, it doesn't even let me change the name of the ppt.

Is my version of ppt corrupt perhaps? If I reinstall will it fix this? it's
2000 running on xp, with office xp. my office xp didnt come with ppt so i'm
using an old version.

any kind help would be so appreciated. i've never used this forum before.

Louise,

Things like black image colours are often video problems. So, make sure you
have the latest video drivers installed. And yes, you can buy a brand new
machine with everything pre-installed and not have it set up with the latest
fdrivers. As I learnt from someone today.

Else, get back and we'll muck with other options.

hey thanks, so where do I find the right video drivers.
so you know the powerpoint that's on my lap top works just fine

I'd start here:

General troubleshooting procedures

But first, you mentioned that you have an older version of PPT on XP? How
old?

And while we're at it, you said you couldn't change the page size or save to
a new name ... why not? That is, what does PowerPoint do when you try?
Give us the exact text of anything it snarls at you. ;-)

Thanks steve, I've read through this helpful troubleshooting procedure and
nothing works.

I am running ppp2000. I was using office xp, but I just now rolled that back
to office 2000 with a clean install and entirely removed office xp.

I still cannot change or add colours to the background palette even if I
open up a new file. For example, when I choose custom, the gradient bar on
the right of the colour spectrum is grayed out even if I move the arrow up
or down. If I point to a colour, it's shown in the new colour box, but when
i hit okay or apply it shows as black as a new colour.

On my lap top version, if I do the same, the grayed out gradient bar shows
the hue and lightness of that colour I'm picking. This seems to be the
difference.

Other issues are that I can't change the page set up size. And when i try to
save as, the name only shows as the first letter of the name

do you need more?

Again, I've taken off, reloaded, over and over again, to no avail.

I am now so behind on my work. any help would be great.

Hi Louise,

I hate to say it, but it sounds as though there's something seriously wrong
with the system.
You might be better off in the long run reformatting the HDD and
reinstalling Windows and apps, but let's see if any other suggestions come
up first.

One other idea - does your version of Windows support multiple users? If
so, create a new user, install Office (to the same folder as it's currently
in now) if necessary and see if that sorts it.
We've seen a few examples of corrupt user profiles causing weird problems in
PPT.

Um. That's a user profile that's corrupt, not the profile for a corrupt
user. 'kay? ;-)

I think you are right, it's a corrupt user (me) I created a new user and got
into powerpoint and it worked beautifully. I could change colours and add
things.
I guess I could just work in that user profile, however, all my image files
are in theother profile location.

hmmm.

Little known fact:
You don't have to store your documents in "My Documents". You can store
them in a directory on your hard drive. {g}When you store them somewhere
other than in "My Documents", every userid on the system can access them.

How does this help you? Log in using the corrupted id. Bring up Windows
Explorer. Create a new folder on your hard drive. Drag all your files from
"My Documents" to the new folder. Log out. Log in as the new id. Bring up
Windows Explorer. Drag everything from the new folder to "My Documents".
Voila! Access to everything you used to have!

Ah, good, that explains the "always black" from the color wheel. So you
can ignore the reply I posted a few minutes ago. :-)
