Hey all,

Here is my setup.
3 computer network. All running WinXP SP1. 1st computer hooked up
to Comcast cable internet, 1.5mb. We HAD the cable internet going
through the cable modem into a Linksys router and then going to each
computer, but the stabilty of the router was questionable. We are now
using a Linksys hub to do the same thing, and the internet works great
on all computers. However we cannot share files with the Windows File
sharing. Why is this and what can i do? I have used the exact same up to
share files before, so whats going on?

By replacing your router with a HUB, you are causing the ISP to give you
3 IP addresses, one for each computer hooked to the HUB. Most ISPs charge
extra for this. The problem is that each of the IP addresses are likely
not on the same subnet so you cannot share files on your LAN. In reality,
with this configuration you do not have a LAN. You have 3 computers
hooked individually to the Internet.

Post the results of "ipconfig /all" to confirm the above. I may be
mistaken but I believe this is what has happened.

Your router when connected created your private LAN in a subnet where you
could share files.

What's worse, since he probably still has file sharing active, anybody
on the Internet can probably browse his stuff.

For the above reason, turn off file sharing before doing so (even though
the harm may already have been done).
