Please help: ATI 9700Pro fan dying

My fan is dying, but when I disconnect it the card doesn't pass the post.

Is there a way to disconnect the fan completely from the card? mabe replace
it by a resistor?

I'm thinking about either mounting a bigger heatsink, or installing a
separate fan powered by the power supply - but the card doesn't want to pass
the post with internal fan disconnected

please help
 
I'm not bloody surprised,

To have no fan working on the 9700pro is instant death.
Get a replacement as soon as or go for a Zalman ZM80D-HP @

The fan comes away by squeezing the plastic retainer clips and she should
pop away easy.

since the card with disconnected fan doesn't pass the post, i figured that
the card itself somehow knows that the fan is not connected (the black and
red wires)

so i'm thinking is there a way to simulate a fan - e.g. replace fan with a
resistor - video card will think that the fan is connected

of course resistor will not cool the GPU - but that's another problem

It may sadly be too late M8, hope not 4 your sake -see below !

You are worried, concerned and talking shite !

Many solution to the Tachy - fix the cooling first then - get back
and ask.

Warty's right, do something about it.

- completely switch off from mains supply, wait 5 minutes
- then take out the card
- then unscrew the x4 little black screws
- remove the fan
- turn it upside down
- peel back the [ corner of ] the little white sticker
- then oil it with [ a very little - sewing machine type ] light oil
- then rotate L & R, and replace the sticker
- then replace!

Remove the [ shite & fluff ] quilt from the heatsink or it will
stop working again.

Do not use WD40 !

oiled it, cleaned it, worked for a couple of months, on its last legs now

still the questions stands - is ther a way to fake radeon card into thinking
that fan is attached while it is not?

Attach a new bugger
 
Estimate how much current the fan draws while running (look at some
comparable fans of similar size). Divide 12 V by it to get the equivalent
resistance, then plug a resistor of equal value into the fan ports.

That, or just get a Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer.

pop the pushpins out and replace with any x3 wire fan , or connect the
tach wire only from any other x3 wire to the appropriate header, eg
get any old scrap 486 fan etc snip the power from the header and
connect the plug containing only the ' tach ' wire to the header.

It's crazy to run the card without any cooling, if you must do so, do
the above then remove the non-working fan and replace with a Zalman
passive type cooler.

Since people run these cards FANLESS on a regular basis that's NEVER the
problem. I'm one of them.
It shuts itself OFF because of immense HEAT. Coooling is your problem.

i would like to believe you - it makes more sence

BUT the fact of the matter is that the moment i disconnect the fan the pc
doesn't even pass the post - and the radeon card is pretty cool at that
moment

if i plug the fan back - PC boots and loads windows OK and the radeon chip
is much hotter at that time

jk, favour please - make sure you are putting the right name to the right
quote. I didn't say the things you put under my name - 'I' dont want to try
and run a card without cooling. Cheers, Shaun :-)

From the ATI site: The Radeon 9700Pro must be connected to the
computer? power supply to meet its performance and high-speed memory
requirements.
In order to supply the ATI Graphics Accelerator card with the
necessary power, we have included the Power Extension Cable.
Use the Power Extension Cable to connect the Radeon 9700Pro to the
computer? hard Drive power connector.
