bios, cables & Mothebord(ports) are okay.

Boot into Safe Mode, open Device Manager, delete/remove ALL CD/DVD ROM
drives you find, reboot and Windows will re-detect the drives.

That's the same port you made before. Unless you have new information, I'll
make the same suggestion.

Gentlemen,

I have a variation on this theme. I recently uninstalled some software
(photoshop) and then noticed that my cd and dvd drives would not show up in
explorer or only the cd drive would show up in explorer. I searched this
forum for help and found a fix by Doug Knox. This is a script/executable
that fixes the key classes in the registry. You must then reboot after this
is performed. This works fine. However, it doesn't seem to be permanent. I
reinstalled photoshop; rebooted and the drives disappeared again; ran Doug's
fix; rebooted and the drives were back.

It seems that this sequence of events is going to be a constant for me and
it is getting fairly annoying. I know it's being fixed, but rebooting every
other time you do something gets old.

Does anyone know if I am missing a step that will make this fix permanent?

Thanks,

Jim

What is up with your copy of "Photoshop"? And why do you keep
reinstalling it? Sounds like that is what is "hosing" the registry.

No.. Photoshop is not the issue. At least I don't think it is. I purchased
the combo package of photoshop & elements; installed photoshop; went to
install elements and the dvd drive would not read the disc (dvd rom).
Thought it was a disc problem as the dvd would read cd's with software or
music or data; returned the set for a new set; removed photoshop; drive
letter problem shows up; find solution by Knox; installed new photshop so the
serial number on the machine would match the disc and discovered the dvd
drive would still not recognize a dvd (everything but a dvd); replaced the
dvd drive; and this is where I'm at right now. Hope the above makes some
sense.

That's what I thought.. I'll investigate more later on today to see if my
system has stabilized. Thanks...
