Hi everyone. This is my first post on these forums.

My girlfriend's laptop, an Acer Travelmate 2200 is messed up. She tried to use Partition Magic to merge the two 20ish Gig partitions into one. Basically it screwed the drive up.
She has no back up disc and no discs were supplied with the PC. There is of course an official Microsoft sticker on the base of the laptop and she obviously holds a license. However, Acer will only supply an image cd for the price of £50!

[mucks edit:]

Thanks in advance.

Hi mate, thanks for replying.
It wouldn't boot at all, thepartions hadn't finished merging, it was all very bad. As she needed to use the laptop urgently I put the beta of Vista on there, it was the only way to get it going. I have no dodgy windows, and wouldn't and shouldn't need a copy, I have a legit license, just no backup cd!

haha, ok.
I also spoke to microsft too, but they say as its an oem windows xp they cant do anything. The nice lady told me she didn't think they should charge for the cd though. Good of her to say...

To be honest I expected an admin charge to cover the media, burning and postage, say £10, that would be plenty, £50 is just a rip off. But they have me over barrel if I can't get one from the great ppl on the internet.

I don't doubt your word ... but I had to edit anyway. ;)

What does the sticker say on the base of the laptop, Home or Pro ... no not give me the licence code.

What OS are you using?

No problem, I understand what my request looks like in the murky world of the web!

It says:
Windows XP Home Edition
Acer Incorporated
barcode serial type thing
Product key (then the product key)
barcode
serial type thing

there is also a serial type thing on the right hand side in a vertical position.

The Vista Beta running on the laptop is horrible, so I need to get this sorted, it looks like £50 though doesn't it?

Nope! not necessary ...

Do you know anyone who has an XP home CD ... use it to do a clean install, BUT use the code on the lappie then go get any drivers you need from ...

Seriously?

A friend that I have discussed this with has a version of XP Home, however he said that certain serial keys are tied to different version of xp, retail for example. My key being an Acer oem wont work with it, well thats what he said. I hope you are right!
I'll get the cd off him tomorrow an try it. Is he incorrect?

One reason I ask for your sticker details ...

There is a possibility it may not work ... but nether you nor your friend will get into any trouble for trying as you do have a legitimate Licence.

You have nothing to loose, especially not £50. ;)

I can assure you it is not illegal. :)

Home wont work with pro or vic versa

OK. Thanks for your help and your time.

I'll be back when I have tried it. Fingers crossed.

Just a quick post to update you. I tried my mates XP Home Retail and it allowed installation. I did have to call M$ and read the long activation code to them, they happily abliged with a code and I am typing this on the other halfs laptop.

Thanks for the advice and ha, that £50 stays in my pocket Acer!

Justice.
