On my wireless LAN connections, I will CONSTANTLY get
disconnected only to find that Windows XP Pro doesn't like
my insecure network (WEP not enabled.) There is no reason
why I would ever need to enable security on my network.

After I get disconnected, I select the "Allow me to
connect to this insecure wireless network" (or something
like that) but it only makes the connection work for a few
minutes.

I find it rediculous that when I shell out $200 for an
upgrade to Windows XP Professional the wireless networking
is worse than in Windows 98. This problem only occurs
after I install Windows XP SP1. PLEASE tell me how to fix
it. I am very experienced with the registry entries, yet I
cannot find anything that will "select" the "ignore non
WEP networks." Please help! Thank you in advance.

P.S. Maybe a special patch is needed for users who dont
need WEP protection on their networks?

Hi, Bryan -

I run a fully patched version of Windows XP on an
unencrypted wireless network at home and at the office.
The home WAP is a D-Link 802.11g router and the office
WAP is an Intermec 802.11b WAP. The PC is a Toshiba
tablet PC with integrated 802.11b.

Next time you see that dialog box hit the "Advanced"
button (I think it says "Advanced", anyway - I'm
connected through my work LAN right now) instead of
accepting the defaults you should see an option
to "automatically connect to available networks in the
order listed below". That should allow you to connect
without prompting.

The dropped connections are a separate issue - and one
that might be corrected with a current driver. I do know
that on my XP Tablet PC Edition machine with every patch
known to man installed it's still rock solid at home -
but at the office since the WAP is on a different floor
than I am the connection tends to be a little spotty.

hope this helps a little -

Thanks Allan. It seems to be working for now, but
sometimes it take a couple hours for problems to show up.
