I have media player 10 installed and would like to play slide shows recorded
on DVD--when I try to play I get a message "A compatible DVD decoder is not
installed"-. When I go to the web page I find an almost infinite number of
available downloads. Please which do I need?
Get the same message when attempting to play a commercial disk.
Thanks for any help--Mel

Windows doesn't supply a DVD codec. One has to pay a license fee to watch DVDs. As not everyone uses a computer to watch DVDs MS won't pay it and charge you as people would be buying things they don't want. For jpegs, which also one has to pay a license fee to view, MS does pay as almost every user views jpegs (from web pages if nowhere else).

Nearly every DVD player comes with a Codec to be installed in windows, typically as part of DVD playing software. MP10 will use the same codec.

So if MS supplied it you would have to pay twice for viewing DVDs whether you use it or not.
