Hello,

i've created a media collection of home movies using a DVD Recorder and
writing to -RW discs. However, I'm having trouble playing them back on
Windows XP.

I didn't buy any extra software or anything, just came with the Media
Center. Do I need some special software or something? Any suggestions? (I
saw something called a 'decoder' but didn't know what that was).

I'm thinking of getting the DVDs all onto my hard drive and begin editing
them from there.

thanks!

Yes, you will need decoding software, which is not part of Windows XP.

Generally the most commonly used are PowerDVD (www.gocyberlink.com) WinDVD
(www.intervideo.com) and nVidia Pure Vision (www.nvidia.com). Normally one
of these comes preinstalled with your PC as part of the PC manufacturer's
bundle. If you purchase a separate DVD drive (either external or internal),
it often comes on a CD as part of that package.
