Hi there,

I forget who, but some of us had been chatting about reversing a video
(water goes back into glass type of thing), I know PapaJohn was one of them.

Well, being a programmer I downloaded the relevant SDK from Microsoft
and started messing around with it. I found the SDK to be lacking in the
information I needed (or at least I could not find it) and as it is now
several years (7-8) since I was a subscriber to the Tech Net and Developer
network) I found it hard going without those oh so useful pearls of wisdom
you can buy from Microsoft.

I got a program to successfully take a video clip and reverse it (In
memory) which as you would guess is very resource hungry, but when it was
saved it was never quite right...there would always be a glitch or two,
mostly if a black or very dark background was involved.

Anyway, two days ago, I had all but given up. I uninstalled the SDK
(roughly a third of a Gig!!!) and carried on tinkering with the program.
That's when I noticed that Media Player sounded AWFUL. I also have the paid
for version of MusicMatch, and playing the same audio clip, it sounded
great....well I have found the cause and its going to mean a full restore of
a two week old backup (6 DVD's) It seems that when I removed the SDK it
screwed things up for Movie Maker and Media Player, but not for MusicMatch
or...and this is where it gets real interesting Newsoft VideoWorks.

I ran Videoworks to see if the audio was messed up on that as well, and
its fine. So the problem is restricted to Microsoft products...BUT GUESS
WHAT !!!!

Videoworks Version 5, which came with my Cannon DVM500i, has an
absolutely marvellous option called Reverse Sequence, not only does it
reverse the video, it also reverses the audio...an area I had not yet
reached. So, as I have the capability and in any case see no need to
re-invent the wheel as it were I have scrapped my program in favour of one
that works very much better.

Hi John,

Thanks for the feedback from the programming perspective - I added your note
about Videoworks to the Editing... Video... Reverse Effect page of the
website

Hi there,

Yes...I should have said, Programmers don't die, their subscription runs
out!!
