In PPT 2003, is there a way to get a music file and a video file to
automatically play at the same time?

I selected "Automatic" for both, but the music won't start until I click on
the "speaker" on the screen.

Set the audio file to "Play with Previous" assuming the video is the
previous action.

Thank you.

That works perfectly.

I also am experimenting with the automatic advance of the slides and it
appears that the music file (one of the MS Examples) is longer than the video
clip (also one of the Examples), so the advance waits until the video clip is
done.

At the risk of asking a question that is not part of this group, is there a
way to shorten the music file or to cause the slide to change automatically
even if the music isn't done?

You can edit the length of the audio file with a sound editor.

A really good free (open source) version is
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Download it - install it - open your existing music file - trim it (cut the
end of) - fade the new end out using the 'fade' tool.

Re-save the music file

start powerpoint
re-insert your music file.

Thanks everyone for the responses.

I also discovered Windows Movie Maker and found that I can trim the video or
music to fit each other in length. I then selected "File/Publish Movie" to
save the project as a movie and then inserted the movie into PPT.

Now both the sound and video stop and start at the same time.
