I do not know how, but to my surprise, on my desktop I see a large places bar
! I would like to remove it, but I do not succeed. Restarting the computer
doesn't work either. Changing properties of the desktop : no effect. Any help
?

Not sure what you mean by "places bar". If you are referring to the
Taskbar (Start button, Quick Launch, Open apps and System
Tray)........simply hover your mouse pointer over the top edge of the
Taskbar until it turns into a vertical, double-ended arrow.....hold the left
mouse button and drag the Taskbar up or down to your desired size and
release the button. It should remain at the size you leave it. If you have
the Taskbar customized to use 'large icons', you will be limited on how
short you can make the taskbar.
Heirloom, old and keep mine short

There is no Places Bar on the Desktop. Perhaps you mean the Common Tasks
Bar. If so, to get rid of it, go to Doug Knox's site,
http://www.dougknox.com. On the left, click Win XP Fixes, then Remove Common
Tasks from Desktop.

"Places Bar" to me is the left blue part of an explorer window, with three
panes : details, other tasks and other locations. If you want it, you can
replace it with the map tree.
It was this part that showed up on the desktop, left side. Right side was
the desktop itself. I have never seen it before. Eventually, I was able to
remove it by the system restore procedure.
