Placement of fan filters?

Hello,

I bought a computer that was originally built by a guy for his own
use. There are 8 fans in the box. Three are inflow fans, two are
outflow fans, and there are three internal fans pointing at a drive or
video card. None of the fans have filters and the box is accumulating
a lot of dust.

I bought some vent filter material that I plan to cut to size and hold
in position with double back tape. I assume that the inflow fans
should be filtered.

Is it necessary to filter the outflow or internal fans? Are vent
filters OK for computer fan filters? Is there any problem with double
back tape to hold the filter in position?

Thanks a lot,

Bob

No, so long as the inflow fan filters are doing the job. In fact, you don't
want to block the outflows with anything...let them blow the dust out!

Thanks John. Just what I thought. How about the type of filter
material. I have two types of vent filter. One you can see through and
it permits a lot of air to come in. The other is more dense, you can't
see through it very well, and it reduces the air intake by about half.

I went with the see through with a lot of air flow. Does that sound
right?

Thanks,

Bob

IMO it's a trade-off. If you want to catch all the small dust you need a
huge surface area with a fine filter to get the necessary airflow. In this
case, the sacrifice in airflow probably isn't worth the dust reduction. Or
maybe it is...does your motherboard have a monitoring program for case
temps?

With the filter you're using you'll have to take the computer outside and
blow it out with a compressor once a year, maybe. Peek in there once in a
while and when you see dust accumulating--that's the time.

And this has what to do with the OS? NOTHING.

Ask elsewhere.

If you dry clothing, or have access to its final product; take the used
dryer anti-static remnants for a filter. Only filter the ingoing air.
Place the PC off the floor if carpeted. A couple of bricks will work fine.
Or, perhaps, a painted cinder block. This is obviously a tower enclosure
(PC case). If the owner smokes, place an air filtration unit in the room.
Eliminate any source of airborne dust as much as possible.

If you have nothing to add just ignore the thread, there is no reason to be a jerk.
