Sorry to disappoint you, but upto PPT 2003 this is not possible. Starting
with PPT 2007 that will be launched soon I hope you will to able to do what
you want.

That's correct. The two-column format is one of PPT's auto-layouts; these
aren't editable (now ... they will be in 2007).
If it helps, when you choose a two-col layout for a slide, PPT will fit the two
columns into the area taken up by the body text placeholder on the slide master
and reduce the text size (by 2 points, I think it is).
Hint: if using 2002 or later, you could add a new slide master and adjust its
body text placeholder to give you the two-col width/height/size you want.
