placeholders instead of spacing transparent gifs

(second attempt)

A common practice among websites is to use a small transparent gif such
as spacer.gif, which is used by photoshop et al, in order to give size
to a blank table element.

Now, I (and i'm sure others) suffer from IE 6.1 occasionally deciding to
show an img placeholder icon (red x) in place of spacer.gif.

I've always had this problem with 6.1 but recently it is getting worse.
It seems to be related to the speed at which the page was downloaded.
The faster, the more likely it is for IE to make the mistake.

For instance, on a dial up connection, it just plain won't happen. On
512kbit broadband, it might happen occasionally but nothing to worry
about. On 1mbit it happens pretty frequently and is incredibly
annoying. BUT, when i'm testing my site on apache win32 locally, it
happens 5/10 times i pull a page. I'm constantly having to hit F5.

Isn't it about time for a patch?

Possible causes that have been banded about (all of which make no
difference)

* Slow Video Card and/or out-dated Video Card drivers..
I have a Geforce Ti4200 and the latest Det drivers

* Incorrect Character encoding..
Doesn't make any difference if i have western forced or not.

Any more ideas?

A .jpg with out a image will show as a place holder.

Use " " with out the quotes and all you will see or "not see" is a
space.

never-always,
You may need to clear your TIF as you may have a corrupt file there.

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK
