Hello! My name is Chris, and I am a Network Engineer by trade. More
specifically, a contractor (I know - we are all lazy bums).

I have been using many programs from the Pricelessware Site now - my
clients love everything from OpenOffice to PowerArchiver.

However, I feel the site lacks a category - server daemons. Or any
similar name you care to think of.....

I have spent the last few years testing out free email servers, web
servers, database servers, and other such nonsense. I submit that a
category for these items would help out everyone. Why? Because most
of these programs will run on workstation-class software (IE
Win2000Pro or WinXP), which is much less expensive than the copies of
Win2K3 server I sell to clients.

I could populate the ENTIRE category to start, with functional &
quality products.

I hope you guys are listening & interested.

I second your suggestion. I have also exprienced such programs... Such
as the "Mercury/32 Email Server" for an email server. For web server,
"Sambar", "Xitami" and "Abyss". are fine servers, as well as Apache.

The only server listed in Pricelessware is Hamster, which is a
usenet/mail server.

Best regards,
-Garrett

I'm actually after an SMTP server myself as my current one has gotten
completely screwed up (thanks to the AOHell software).

Any reccomendations? (note: I'm after an actual server, not a relay or
anything that requires a server before it is able to send...... must also
run on 98SE)

Hamster Playground will do what you want. Hamster Classic can be made
to do it, by using scripts, but when I recently asked the Hamster folks
about it, they recommended Hamster-Fr, which handles it natively. If I
were to try it, i would stick with Hamster Playground rather than Fr,
but only because all the Fr documentation seems to be in French.

Hamster-Fr:
<http://hamster-fr.sourceforge.net/>

Hamster Playground and a howto on directly connecting to recipients'
MXes:
<http://www.elbiah.de/hamster/>
<http://www.elbiah.de/hamster/doc/howto/mailmx.htm>

All Hamsters are open source, and help is availble in the hamster.*
hierarchy.

Hello Chris,

You are too late for PL2004. Nominations for the *2005* Pricelessware
list will be in the fall.

The PL selection process focuses primarily on *programs* - subcategories
are a secondary consideration.

A few relevant quotes about the Pricelessware List:

<q>
How are Pricelessware programs chosen?

A new list of Pricelessware programs is chosen once a year by
alt.comp.freeware newsgroup participants. Programs are sometimes added
or removed during the year. The list is reviewed regularly for updated
versions.

The Pricelessware List is the compilation of the favorite Freeware
programs of the readers of alt.comp.freeware. The programs picked are
not meant to be an exhaustive list of the best available Freeware, but
rather an answer to the often asked "which _____ is best?"

Sub-categories are provided for ease of reference, but it is NOT the
goal of the Pricelessware vote to come up with a program to fit every
category.
</q>

What to do about "niche" programs was discussed last year - and will be
discussed again before PL2005 nominations begin.

Mercury Mail Transport System: Mercury is a free, standards-based mail
server solution, providing comprehensive, fast server support for all
major Internet e-mail protocols. It is supplied in two versions, one
hosted on Windows systems, the other running as a set of NLMs on Novell
NetWare file servers.

http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_mercury.htm

I have personally used this one myself and can vouch for it's
usefulness and it's stability. But be sure you read the help file on
how to set it up. Don't leave it open for outside email relay.

Garret,
This is the same as Pegasus right? (tried Pegasus this morning and couldn't
get the damn thing to work, lol (looked more like a mail client than a mail
server)).

I'll take a look (and thankyou) ;o)

Pegasus is an e-mail program. Mercury is a mail server which was
written with an eye toward working well with Pegasus, but it should
work with any client.

I've just been reading through the help file's for Mercury and can't seem to
get the damn thing to send (just gives errors saying it couldn't resolve the
address ("temporary MX resolution error").

This is not a good day to be me :o\

I do apologize for not mentioning that it's a bit of a complicated
bugger to set up. It's been a couple of years since I had it in
operation on a server myself and can't remember how to set it up.

Anyone else here remember how to set this thing up?

If not, try the Hamster usenet/email server listed on one of the
pricelesssware sites.
