PL suggestion. Is this possible ?

I know that there are some very good programmers/script writers that
visit this group so I thought I might suggest a PL list idea I had
recently.

Going through the PL list to see if one has any "new" freeware that
might be worth suggesting is a rather tedious process. Suppose one has
20 "great" freeware programs. One might need to check the PL list up
to 20 times. Bad enough if one has downloaded 20 programs since the
last PL vote BUT a lot worse if that number is eg. 200.

Suppose one could have two lists (arrays ?). One with the PL list
files and one with one's best freeware downloads. Comparing them might
go something like :

PL List Good freeware.

abc.exe bbn.exe
bbn.ex ccd.exe
cvd.exe jkf.zip
hty.exe

Results, programs not currently classified as "Priceless" ;

ccd.exe
jkf.zip
hty.exe

I know a "file compare" program should do this but they aren't always
easy to setup/use. A program/script that would allow a "cut and paste"
of the existing list, and the "Good freeware" list, then automatically
sort both lists/compare/output would be handy. IF such a thing could
be made. Doable ? Comments ?

Regards, John.

I could create a single column list with the download descriptions -
which include the file names:

download v 2.75 complete package (2002-09-27) (cdcin275.zip) (15 MB)
download v 7.1.0 (2004-02-25) (setup710.exe) (16,920 KB)
download page v 1.1.3rc (2004-09-17)(OOo_1.1.3rc_Win32Intel_install.exe)
(45 MB)
etc.
etc.
etc.

I'm not convinced it would be much help for comparison.

First snag - many apps include the version number as part of the file
name - what if your version is different? Second snag - some apps have
*many* variations available (for example: XnView). The file you
downloaded may not match the files shown in the PL description.

anyway. . .

IMO checking for apps that are *already* on the Pricelessware List (261
apps) is only slightly tedious. . .

At last count there were 3348 apps listed on the ACF program info pages
- duplicate checking against that list is a bit more challenging. . .

You're also dealing with the fact that although back in the 70's there used
to be a standard for version numbering there hasn't been a standard being
used in a number of years. It seems like everyone who thinks they're a
programmer is now using their own versions of version numbering. Add to
that the fact that some people putting programs out don't even use the same
file naming format from one version to the next so you might have a program
listed as ProgramX v1.0 and the next version be some WA name like
GoobersProgramX ver 1.896 .
