HELLO

i think autohotkey should be selected AutoHotkey as Pricelessware because
This scripting program is very easy to learn, it wouldn't take more than an
hour to master all the main functions. The best thing about it is that you can
make exactly what you want without having any expert knowledge. The syntax are
in plain English Autohotkey has made it possible for me and others like me
who have very little programing experience.
And the autohotkey forum is the best help forum I have ever been to I have
never waited long for one of my scripting questions to be anserded the AUTHOR
is very willing to help you.
And further more I think it would be a huge disappointment and loss if
autohotkey was not selected Pricelessware.

All programs with 10 votes or more were selected this year. ISTM that if
you had posted that testimonial during the *discussion* period
AutoHotkey might have gotten another vote or two. . . As it is, AutoIt
got 12 votes, AutoHotkey got 9.

You haven't given me a reason to include it as a special case - a
program that does something none of the other PL programs do. OTOH 9
votes is pretty close to 10. . . Let's see what others think.

Comments from the group please. Include on PL2005 or not?

I agree with sleepy that it would be a shame if Autohotkey missed the
boat. It *is* simple enough scripting, that many beginners are amazed at
what they can do right off the bat. There are *many* examples in the
help file that you can copy and paste into a text editor, and off you go.

It can do so many things, it's hard to name just a few. Basically, one
of it's big points, is automating something. Example: if you have a
program that you run all of the time and they are a few screens that you
have to click on or enter information on, it can do that for you. It can
be "smart" about it too, by detecting what screen is showing or even
what control is showing.

It can make transparent your windows, it can hide windows, it can run
programs. It's like a *lot* of programs rolled into one. Some people use
it for one specific thing and others use it for many, many things.

I use many scripting languages so I know what others can do. Autoit,
winbatch, perl, gui4cli, etc. But Autohotkey has an easy learning curve,
very good documentation and is very cool! Also, it can make small
exe's out of your scripts so that you can give them to friends.

Chris, the developer, is always adding new things to it. Almost every
week there are new features added.

Anyway, I have a siamese twin and he forgot to vote. So now he now wants
to vote for Autohotkey. Now it's 10... Hummm?

And as soon as the next AutoIt source is released, AutoHotKey will
have even more features...

Sorry... true... Just wait to see how long it takes for "DLLCall" to
make it's way into AutoHotKey... I think "Jon Bennett" should be
listed as Lead Developer on AutoHotKey...

AutoHotKey is a bastard step child,,, Kind of like the "Biggest Fan"
from the movie "The Incredibles".

AutoIt is truly Priceless...

Hurtful words Larry. I've spent nearly all of my leisure time over the past two years
developing AutoHotkey. More than 90% of the AutoHotkey.exe source code is my original
work.

Jon has been credited on the very first page of the help file, which pops up automatically
when new users install the software with the default settings. The following quote has
been there from the beginning (version 1.0.0):

"A special thanks to Jonathan Bennett, whose generosity in releasing AutoIt2 as free
software in 1999 served as an inspiration and time-saver for myself and many others
worldwide. In addition, many of AutoHotkey's enhancements to the AutoIt2 command set, as
well as the Window Spy and the script compiler, were adapted directly from the AutoIt3
source code. So thanks to Jon and the other AutoIt3 authors for those as well."

This kind of response is *precisely* why I stopped using autoit a *long*
time ago. Unprofessional in every aspect.

Your response is low *even for you*.

Aaarghhh I lost track of the schedule.
I had meant to vote at least for some vote critical programs.
Would certainly have voted for both AutoIt and AutoHotkey.

So did I - it's no wonder you were confused. ;)

ISTM that BarryTone's siamese twin's vote and your "almost" vote put
AutoHotkey over the 10 vote mark. ;)

and. . . There have been some good arguments for adding AutoHotkey to
PL2005. It shall be done.

My thanks to all who responded.

I apologize for my tone, but I have used AutoIt for nearly 4 years. I
have seen the source code of both AutoIt and AutoHotKey. AutoIt IS
Priceless. The code is a work of Art. AutoIt prevails without
recruitment or cheerleading. AutoHotKey has 10 times the promotion of
AutoIt, yet only 10% of the user community. AutoIt's focus is on
foundation and speed. AutoHotKey's focus is on everything And the
kitchen sink. The syntax IS NOT easy to follow... The whole reason
AutoIt v3 was created. You have cryptic symbols and even "C" syntax
brackets "{}" and "+=".

The whole subject here is Priceless... Early on in the thread there
was a reference / comparison to AutoIt... That's where I come in. I am
sorry, but AutoHotKey does not compare to AutoIt except where
functionality has been excerpted...

It is not my intention to be hurtful. It is my intention to define
"Priceless".

AutoHotKey has it's niche. In the same barrel as AutoIt v2 and
ScriptIt. But, who knows... Bell Bottoms came back... there is always
hope...

Great! Thank you, Susan!

I know you've already agreed to add AutoHotkey to PL, but just so you
know, AutoHotkey has my vote for inclusion as well :)

Thank you. I try to be even-handed in the preliminary PL selections -
sometimes it's a tough call to make. I appreciate the additional "vote"
for AutoHotkey's inclusion. :)

< snip >

Perhaps he meant that his program is a bastard and yours a bastard's
step child ?

In any case you have done a very good job of explaining to ordinary
people how to use your program. Well done !

Keep up your excellent work. :-)

Regards, John.

P.S. Very pleased to see you now have a forum and mailing list
going.

ISTM that this is that way open source software is supposed to work.
