This problem must have been going on 2 years now. I have had several calls
to Canon, but it takes so long for them to get back, and then I'm never
around when they do, so it goes on and on.

I have reinstalled the software on my PC and on a Laptop and got it printing
on paper fine from both computers, but neither will print a CD cover, it
just takes in the blank and spits it out blank.

You need to provide a lot more information. Are you printing discs or
covers? What software? If it's discs, does the tray feed in OK? Does it give
you an error message?

That's not the only information required.

1. Where, as in what country, did you buy the printer?
2. Did it come with the CD tray, or did you buy the tray separately?
3. What country do you have selected in your Windows Regional
Settings?

All of these affect the ability of an IP4000 / IP4000R to print on
blank, printable CD/DVDs.

Also, if anyone has ever entered the printer's service mode, it's
possible to disable CD/DVD printing. Print out the printer's EEPROM
page (see http://www.geocities.com/phineaspaine/ip5000psd.pdf for
instructions).
You should get a page that looks similar to this (
http://www.geocities.com/phineaspaine/ip5000.jpg )
If the name of the printer in the top left corner is CYAN coloured, CD/
DVD printing is currently disabled.
If the name of the printer is MAGENTA coloured, CD/DVD printing is
enabled.

Answer the above questions, and we may be able to help you further.

Aas you seem on top of these units, maybe you can help with a somewhat parallel
question.

I was recently given an iP3000 which originally had the CD tray, but the owner
lost it somehow.

Seeing your comment about buying the tray separately, are there any issues if I
do that? (Australia)

TIA

As long as it's a genuine Canon tray, type "B", you should be fine. I get
them on Ebay in the USA.

I'm printing on printable CDs. I have used the printer in the past in this
way and it worked fine. It just stopped working. Bought in England. Tray
came with it. Using Canons supplied CDLabelPrint software (have tried others
equally unsuccessfully).

I get the following message:

The CD-R tray is not inserted or a printable disc is not placed on the CD-R
Tray.
Insert the CD-R tray with a printable disc in the Inner Cover and then press
the RESUME button.
Printing will then restart.

I get the same message with 2 different makes of printable cd's and Verbatim
DVD's.

"Print out the printer's EEPROM"

Have worked through the instructions for doing this at least a dozen times
and it hasn't printed anything.

Finally after about 20 attempts and walking away I returned to find it has
printed the page out. Then had to look up what colours cyan and magenta were
(doh!) and it is MAGENTA.

This is the standard "tray rejection" error message. It can occur with a
number of different problems. The most common cause is the failure of the
user to wait till the printer asks for the disc tray. Or, the shiny foil
squares on the tray are dirty. If this is not the cause, suggest you look
around here:

There may be a solution available there.

Have been working round and round all these solutions on these pages for the
past 2 years and still getting nowhere!

Could be that the CDR LED in the print carriage is burned out, or the
photosensor doesn't pick it the reflections. That would prevent it
from detecting the presence of the CD tray...

Try printing a CD in a pitch black room (at night, curtains drawn),
and see if you can see a red glow from the bottom of the carriage unit
as it crosses over the CD tray. If none is visible, then the CDR LED
is the suspect. If you do see a red glow, then perhaps the
photosensor is in doubt (dirty, or broken), or some other problem.
