It tried to call home immediately after I had installed it. I suspect
all mio stuff does doet.

It's spyware and messing_up_the_registry_ware.

Please test before you post.

So it does. The one I installed however did not as I got it from
somewhere else.

Could be.

Now there is no need for that. Just because something calls home does
not mean it's spyware. Some programs check for updates automatically. I
sent them an email asking them why the ruler wants to get online. I
suggested to them that if it's an automatic update feature that they
should include an option for turning it off.

Until then you can download a version that does not call out from here.

Another creepy post from "Tramp".
"Freeware" that's freeware until you download it, install it and then
find out that it's not really freeware at all.

This is the reply that they sent.

"This is for update (not spyware of course). We should let you disabled
it, we will do it in the next release."

This looks like a pretty nice site. Indeed, there are also
some other applies that look quite good, they all listed as
free and I don't see any "order" button on the site at all,
here is the list if you are interested (but of course, one
wouldn't know how long things stay freeware):

" MioFactory
Use the tools of the web (HTML, JavaScript, Flash...) and
those of multimedia (audio, video, images...) to carry out
Windows applications quickly.

ClipFactory
ClipFactory is a virtual camera that allows you to take
pictures of the screen with a viewfinder. This is the easiest
way to create musical slide-shows, and add an MP3 file for
music.

Pixel Ruler
Features horizontal and vertical orientation, dynamic
mouse measurement tracking in pixels, cool design, and more.

TagMachine
Tag your desktop ! Use a paintbrush to tag your desktop,
save your creation as a .mio file and send it to your
friends....

MioEngine
Download the latest version of mio engine to read .mio
files.

MioToolbox
Toolbox composed of a pixel ruler, a color picker, a
magnifier, and a virtual camera to snap images. "

Here's one that does no not call home.

No install, unzip and run!!

"Free virtual ruler for your computer screen

This Screen Ruler is a great tool that allows you to accurately measure
anything on your screen. This is especially useful when measuring
graphics, web page browser sizes or whatever. Screen Ruler can display
Pixels, Inches, Picas or Centimeters.

When launched, Screen Ruler will appear horizontal showing approximately
400 Pixels in length. When ever your cursor is over Screen Ruler it will
change to cross-hairs and the distance of the cursor from the left (0) of
the ruler will be displayed next to the Size Slide Control.

The "X" Button: This will close Screen Ruler.

The "--" Button: This will minimize Screen Ruler. To reactivate the
program - just click on the minimized box.

The Size Slide Control: You can adjust the size of Screen Ruler by using
the Slider control.

Moving Screen Ruler: To move Screen Ruler to the desired location -
simply place your cursor anywhere on the Ruler, left click and drag while
holding down the mouse button while dragging.

Right Click Options:

Flip: This will toggle the Ruler from horizontal to vertical

Mark Center: This will mark the exact center of the Ruler - if you have
the Ruler set at 600 pixels - a vertical slash will appear at 300 pixels
if you activate the Mark Center option.

Slide to Zero: This will move the starting point (0) of the Ruler to the
far left of your desktop screen.

Pixels, Inches, Picas, Centimeters: The default setting is Pixels. To use
a different measuring system - just click on the desired option.

Close: This will completely close the Screen Ruler.

Download (size: 494 KB)"

Thanks.

"Scale 2.0 presents some unusual tools to help in the design of forms,
web pages, presentations and other visual materials. The main form is
a Tool Bar that you can position in a corner of the screen for easy
use of the tools. The Tool Bar can be placed as an Icon in the system
tray (13K) and, as all the other tools, can be moved freely around the
screen and minimized to the task bar.
From the Tool bar you can open the Rule, to measure horizontal and
vertical distances in 7 different units (pixels, twips, inches,
centimeters, himetrics, characters and points); the Magnifier to
enlarge, up to 30 times, any image or text in the screen (you can make
precise measurement and color pick with this tool ); the Angle
Measurement Tool, to measures angles formed by lines in the screen, in
degrees and radians; the Colour Mixer/Picker to mix and pick colors
and get the respective codes in 6 systems (RGB, VB, HTM, CMY, CMYK
and HSL) and a small Calculator with some useful features.
Scale 2.0 is a freeware and may be distributed freely (credits
intact)."
