Pivot Table - Format of Date Field

I'm retrieving data from an external source and would like the "date" field data to show up in the pivot table in a format that doesn't include the hrs, min, secs. i.e. the data in the external source is formatted like "2/27/2004 11:40:00 AM", but I only care about seeing the date in a format like "02/27/2004" for the purpose of keeping the column width as small as possible. In one of my pivot tables if I select "Field Settings" for the "date" field the PivotTable Field Setting has a tab called "Number" where I can ensure the data shown in this field follows my desired format automatically every time I refresh the data. But in another Pivot table using the exact same data field this option is not available. Therefore the only way to condense the date to the MM/DD/YYYY format is to just reformat the column of the spreadsheet manually every time I refresh the data. Help!! I don't understand why this "Number" formatting option is available in one pivot table, but not the other, when the same field is being extracted from the same data source?? Maybe there's another way around this problem?

Probably because the "dates" in the other pivot are in fact text instead of
dates..

Actually they are not. The data field in each pivot table is from the exact same data source.
