pivot table / drop area bug

When trying to create a pivot table view for a query, table
or form, I can't see the drop areas and can only place a
field as "data", not row or column.

A google newsgroup search shows MANY people having the same
problem and no concrete solution. There are a couple of
mentions of Office XP SP1 or SP2 fixing it, but I've got
SP2 installed and the problem still happens.

Does anyone know of a true solution to this?
 
For other reasons, I used the factory recovery disk to go to a pristine, as
delivered from the factory, Windows 2000 configuration, then reinstalled
Office 2002, and no longer had the problem. And, I later discovered that my
computer, prior to the recovery, had been infected with some virii because
for a short time, I'd had Win 2K Server installed on my notebook computer to
do some demos and didn't think it needful, for that short time, to purchase
a server Anti-Virus and Firewall program. Oh, my, was I ever wrong about
that!
