Totally depends on how it is used. If you let it do the scan and allow it
to just change all suggested settings without really looking and knowing
what it is doing it can trash the computer. Practicing safe hex normally
does not require cleaning the registry or optimizing the system. Many here
think that these kind of programs (paid or free) cause more harm than good.

No, it's just a scam to separate you from your money. It doesn't do
anything useful that you can't already do for yourself using WinXP's
built-in tools.

Yes, actually it is and it has a good reputation.

It's interesting that you brought out nearly the whole group of
closed-minded idiots who historically libel and besmirch any program that
can do anything to help a user with a registry problem and spew their crap
on this particular newsgroup. All the reviews and the millions of satisfied
users mean nothing to that group and they will warn you of the dangers from
now to the end of their days. "Snake oil" is their favorite term and they
use it prolificly.

PC Pitstop isn't the "best" of the crop, but it's certainly one of the more
user friendly and safer products out there offering to assist with
maintenance. It even includes "undo" features in case you got the wrong line
or somehow make a mistake. Simply read and understand the screens and
you'll be fine.
One final word; the registry itself is very seldom the cause of a slow
running computer unless there was a sudden change after the
installation/uninstallation of a program. Cleaners though are great for
maintenance when all else has failed. Usually if there is a problem caused
by the registry it will be a situation where there are 20S wait times while
it looks for a program that's not there but doesn't result in any error
message.
There are situations where I will often make a check of the registry on a
client's machine useing ccleaner and I also recommend that program to
others.
