Hi out there in knowledge land,
I took my pc to a repair place and he used a copy of windows XP. I have the
original and want to uninstall their copy and install my original disk. Will
this be a problem? will I have to re-do the service packs? Will I lose any
stuff that I have downloaded since the dummy copy was installed? Any help
would be appreciated.

Option 1 - you could try - The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for
users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker
or genuine Product Key - all without a reinstall! see instructions

The Key Update Tool will attempt an automatic internet activation but it that's not
possible, the key will be changed regardless and you'll have to telephone to activate.

Option 2 - inplace upgrade - will need to do updates

Option 3 - start over - lose everything.

A copy for what purpose, a repair install?

You don't uninstall, you will have to format and start over.


If you format and reinstall, yes.
installed?<<<<

You can save all your user files to a CD, Jumpdrive, etc. etc. All your
programs will have to be installed.

Before you do anything drastic try the suggestion that Taur posted, I
believe the first should work. If not then give MS a call and I'm sure with
a legit copy you have and a explanation of what happen they will correct the
problem for you.

This may not be a solution for you but give it some consideration.

I have had this problem and was able to use this solution. It all depends on
how much time you are willing to to spend to do the job.

The best solution is to be able to change your windows key to the one on
your legitimate copy.

If not and the computer is working as yours seems to be doine is to save all
your special files and data files to an off site location such as a cd/dvd.

Also copy over to that site your windows files "system" and "System 32 "
files. That way when you rebuild your desk top you can get your programs to
run. When you reinstall windows don't fdisk the hard drive just clear out
the windows directory and reinstall Windows to that directory. Then using
windows explorer run your programs and when they crash because they can't
find a missing file you can copy it over from your backup of the system
directory.

This has worked for me.

As always work slowly and take it a step at a time.
