Folks,

I recently upgraded a venerable compaq presario 5000, model
5wv294 from windows me to windows 2000. After the upgrade,
the pioneer dvd-115 no longer works. The device is
correctly identified by the device manager as a pioneer dvd
drive, however two things stand out as odd.

1. The device appears as a regular cd-rom drive in windows
explorer.

2. When I look at the dvd via the device manager, I am
seeing that the device has a microsoft (generic) cdrom
driver installed.

My questions to the group are:

1. Has anyone experience a similar issue and successfully
resolved it?

2. I am unable to find win2k drivers for my pioneer
dvd-115. Does anyone know where I can find them?

Your advice and guidance are appreciated.

Regards,

Randy.

Dave,

I'm not really understanding your response.

When you say "supported upgrade path", are you saying that
all hardware that was supported under previous releases of
the windows operating system products are not supported
under windows 2000? I am not familiar with what that term
means in the context of microsoft product support. I am
fairly pleased with windows 2000. The installation was
reasonably hassle free and it meets the basic expectations
that I have for windows. My question was more aimed at "Is
the pioneer dvd-115 supported under windows 2000?"

Thanks,

Randy.

There is no supported upgrade path from WinME to Windows 2000

Dave,

Let me ask you this.. Do you think I would have better luck
if I reinstalled windows 98 from scratch and upgraded from
there? Is windows 98 to windows 2000 a supported upgrade path?

You thoughts are appreciated.

Randy.

Yes 98 > 2000 is supported but not necessary. It's always best to clean
install. To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom;
change to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe
(from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

During Windows 2000 setup, at some point, will want to confirm the previous
operating system for the upgrade; at that point you'll simply insert the
qualified product install CD for it to verify. Then the install will
proceed.

Dave,

Once final question, if you know.

Is the pioneer dvd-115 supported under windows 2000?

Thanks,

Randy.

No longer works as in....?
Can't read data?
Can't play a DVD?

If the latter, that's normal. You need to go buy
some new DVD player software, W2K does NOT
come with any nor migrate what you had.
The device is
correctly identified by the device manager as a pioneer dvd
drive, however two things stand out as odd.

Normal.

Not needed.

DVD-115 installed and working here,
on VIA IDE interface as Secondary Master device
with drivers/behavior just as you described above..

Delete the drive in Device Manager and reboot.
See what happens.

Randy,
I have the same problem, THOUGH: once you put a CD in it
and reboot then everything works (in my case), also
changing CDs works, but booting without a CD in it is
considered a "sin".
