Pinging of DNS Servers?

Can anyone think of a reason that a clean WinXP or Win2K machine would
ping the DNS servers listed in the TCP/IP properties fields? I'm
seeing activity of machines pinging the DNS servers on our network, they
machines are all clean of virii.. but it's annoying.. how can I make
WinXP/Win2K stop pinging??!! Why is it doing it?

It depends on what services are running. If the machines have the DNS
client service running, then yes, they are going to look for DNS servers -
this is normal. There are other services that do all sorts of things on a
regular basis (computer browser service, windows time service, etc...) If
you don't want the machines to talk to the network then why would you
connect them to it?
