Ping timeout issue?

I have 2 compaq DL360 servers. One server is running W2k server and the other is running W2kProfessional
They are connected to a 3com switch which is running 100/full. The servers are also hard coded at 100/full
Everyday for about 15 minutes around 3 times a day the servers cannot ping each other. They can ping outside of the subnet that they are on though. If anyone can provide some input, it would be appreciated.

Questions:
1. Why have you hard coded them [switches] at 100mbps full duplex?
2. Are the servers also hard coded at 100mbps full duplex?
3. Which 3COM switch?
4. When is the last time you performed a software upgrade on the switch?
5. Have you reapplied OEM drivers for your server(s) after applying MSFT
SPs?
6. If they're communicating, why is PING important?

Please advise.

Is it a workgroup of 2 with the static IPs? Stop and disable
ComputerBrowsing service on W2k Pro.

<snip>...They can ping outside of the subnet that they are on though...

What is the actual network setup, i.e. what else is connected to the switch
(BTW, what model is it)? If there would be the 2 machines only, the next
step would be a crossover cable, but I'm suspecting the Internet connection
exists somewhere...

: 1. Why have you hard coded them [switches] at 100mbps full duplex?

?

: 2. Are the servers also hard coded at 100mbps full duplex?Yes, the NICs
are hard coded.

There are a lot of issues of hardsetting 100mbps FD. I remember certain
3COM switches having this issue along with one version of the NetFlex
controller card. Having a driver that works at HD or 10/FD/HD doesn't mean
it works at 100FD.

: 3. Which 3COM switch?

?

: 4. When is the last time you performed a software upgrade on the switch? We
have tried other switches Cisco, 3Com and no luck.

What did your wire test at? What level is it?
:
: 5. Have you reapplied OEM drivers for your server(s) after applying MSFT..
All drivers are up to date.
: SPs?

That's great but that's really not what I asked. Did you REAPPLY OEM
drivers AFTER applying MSFT SPs?

: 6. If they're communicating, why is PING important? I am just using PING
as an example. The 3rd party application on the server is having connection
problems.

During down times have you looked at packets on the wire to see what's going
on?
