PING through computer name

We are using Windows 2000 server.
I am facing problem when I ping IP address of server from
my Win XP Prof computer it respond properly BUT when I
ping servername from my Win XP computer it's not
responding.

Example if I write PING 192.168.0.1 from my Win XP to
ping server it respond properly but when I ping
servername it does not.

What could be the reason?
 
Domain Login through Active Directory. I meant user
created in Win2K sever through Active Directory.

Is DNS properly setup? How about dns suffixes?
