Hmm, I'm glad I read through the whole thread before blurting out the name of
the font and its history.
For those who're curious, I suppose it's safe enough to say that it's one of
the oldest, legitimately available free outline fonts and was rather loosely
based on a bitmap font. Probably quite easy to find if one looks, though
arguably not worth the effort (fonts are so readily available these days,
bundled w/ software and operating systems that it's hard to imagine a
reasonable user exhausting what's readily available by default) especially
since there are much nicer ones w/ far wider repertoires (though few script /
decorative fonts are free, rather a shame Microsoft cheaped out on not
including the Ariadne swash capitals in their OpenType version of Palatino
bundled w/ Windows 2000 and later).
