Can anyone tell me why this happens? I have a Windows NT machine on our
intranet that is currently shut down. I try pinging the machine from
another workstation by netbios name and I receive the IP address of the DNS
server. I also try pinging the fully qualified domain name, and receive bad
IP address due to expiration from the DNS.

The question is, why do I receive the address of the DNS server? The
response comes back with ".com" appended to the machine name as well.

Thanks

Can you post ipconfig /all from this client machine?

Anytime pinging a NetBIOS name from a client and the client is configured
with a DNS suffix (default), then it will suffix that suffix and send it to
DNS to resolve it. Kind of surprised that it's only suffixing it with ".com"
and not "yourdomainsuffix.com".

When you ping by FQDN that you typed in and by NetBIOS, does the system show
you the same name after the suffix is attached?

As for what address is returning, check in DNS under your zone to see what
IP address is asociated with that record.
