Ping problems

Here is my setup. I have a modem/router connected to the internet and 2 computers connected to it using ethernet cards. Each computer can connect to the web through the router with no problems and each can ping the router. However, neither computer can ping the other through the router and I cannot setup file sharing between them. One of my machines is running XP home and the other has Win98 (not SE). Both have filesharing activated. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try?

Check that the XP firewall is off and if you have
firewall software either machine make sure the address
for your network is in the trusted zone (if using Zone
Alarm Pro)

can you see the computers in network neighborhood?

both computers need to have IPX/spx protocol installed
AND netbios over tcp/ip needs to be enabled.

Any software firewall you have needs to allow traffic
from one computer to the other in it's filter.

You need to place these computers in the same workgroup
but this isn't nessesary if you cresate accounts on each
computer to make your connections through.
have a nice day,
Joe

Joe, this has been a great help. I hade ZoneAlarm running on both computers and it never occurred to me that it would block LAN traffic. I put the network into the trusted zone and now I can ping to my heat's content! I can see the 98 computer from the XP machine in Network Places but when I try to connect it says I might not have permission to access this network resource.
