Is there a way to tell the difference, when examining the ink itself (in
the bottle) if a black ink is pigmented or dye-based?

In front of a strong light dye black will look a purplish red in colour.

Pigmented black remains black; light doesn't penetrate it very well.

Searching Google, I came up with a swab test for dye or pigment black,
from a previous post by the very knowledgeable Ron Cohen:
Wet a cotton swab with a little of the ink and then wipe it on a scrap piece
of photo paper. The pigmented ink (BCI-3e) will have a somewhat dull finish
while the BCI-6 black will have more of a shine.

BUY CANON OR EPSON OEM CARTS AND YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO ASK THAT STUPID
QUESTION.

HAVE NOT HEARD FROM DAT CHURCHIE IN A LONG TIME. BYE BYE
ALSO BYE BYE BURTIE FURTIE

AND I HOPE SOON TO BE
FRANKIE CRANKIE

BUT I CAN ALWAYS COUNT ON ZUKECUKIE AKA MATT ZUKOWSKI TO RELAY MY
MESSAGE TO THE ENTIRE CONGREGATION.

THIS IS AN AFTERMARKET COMPANY THAT DOES NOT DISCLOSE ON THEIR WEBSITE
WHAT THEY ARE SELLING. THE ONLY WAY TO BE SURE WHAT YOU ARE GETTING IS
TO BUY OEM INK CARTS
