Pigmented ink or dye-archival ink on gloss using inkjet?

To simplify my other posting, is there a combination of inkjet printer
and ink you might recommend that would allow us to print on high gloss
paper (not special inkjet receptive photo paper- its plain commercial
offset gloss) so that the ink wont just smudge/wipe off? For 11 x 17.

Im told the epson photo 1280 is worth trying, with its "UltraChrome
Hi-Gloss Pigment Ink",
would do this..but $600. Anyone ever try this, or know any other
printers or aftermarket cartridges with archival ink for otherwise dye
based ink printers?

Have a look at the Epson R800. Around US$350 and also uses the ultrachome
inks with gloss optimiser.

There was a recent thread about someone who tried to print on offset
gloss paper (and not inkjet gloss). The short answer: The paper
/needs/ to be inkjet receptive or it will just smudge or wipe off.
While pigment ink may be more smudge proof than others, on a high
gloss paper that has no absorbent coating, it will simply bead up or
smear right off of the paper. There's no shortcut, and no way to get
around this. It's a completely different technology than offset
printing and requires a coated paper in order to hold the ink.

Phil-

I have an old Epson Stylus Photo 2000P that uses pigmented ink. When
trying to print on Inkjet Transparency Film, the ink did not dry quickly
enough, and the printer's rollers left tracks in the ink. However,
printing on Inkjet Bumper Stickers, it worked quite well (except when I
printed on the wrong side!).

In other words, you have to try it.

Even if your glossy paper would take the ink, it is also coated with ink
from the offset printing process. Offhand, it would seem that a printer
that uses the "solid" ink would be the best. Your concern about
lamination heat ruining the ink may not be well founded. At the time of
laminating, the ink may be held in place, and suffer no ill effects from
melting. Some spreading may occur, but you must try it to find out.

Rather than purchase each possible printer, why not check your local
office supply stores or quick-print shops like Kinko's? One of them may
have a solution.

Hi,

I have printed on offset paper with my HP 1220 wide format.

The ink bleeds pretty bad. The ink also smudges, the pigment ink
smudges bad, even days...weeks later. As far as fading the colour ink
fades quickly, noticeable within a week or two. The pigment ink doesn't
realy fade.

What I do is lower the ink density, this helps minimize the bleeding.
After I print I immediately spray the paper with a clear UV. Once
sprayed the ink is smudge resistant.

I would say you are better off using Stapes 13 x 19 photo paper.

If you were planning ahead, you could use a videojet printer with UV
curable ink, or likely UV curable ink in a conventional inkjet (looking
towards the piezo types).

FWIW, my generic printer with an HP#26 cart printed fine on a CD insert
sheet (from a cheap CD that never bothered to print a proper track list),
and it apparently was offset printed.
