My son installed some software the other day (possibly
Real Audio) and a piggy back software program was
installed that caused popups to occur. It was also
gathering information. I had to remove it manually (edit
registry to remove all references to the software and
removed the software directory).

Now I am unable to use network services other than serving
up a drive to another computer on my network.

I have tried performing a Windows 2000 Profession recovery
intstall, but no luck.

Does anyone have a work around for this or am I going to
have to blow my computer away and perform a total reload?

Likely a reload. What happens is a different protocol is put on the machine. You can see this in HKCR\Protocols in the registry. This "piggy back" software as you call it sets up a Network Connection deep in the bowels of the Registry elsewhere. A fix may be possible. First I would get Ad-Aware 6; HijackThis; and Spybot. Run all these and see if these can clean up\find the trouble. Afterwards try to Reeinstall your Network TCP\IP connections. This in Start | Settings | Dial up and Network Connections. What you do is just pick your Local Area Connection and choose Properities. You'll see how it is done. But run the bug removers first.
