I'm trying to set up a pier to pier network between two laptops
running XP home. I would like to go through the ethernet cards. So far
all I come up with through the network setup wizard is a dial-up
network or LPT port. Is there any way to do this with an ethernet
connection?

Yes, of course you can connect two computers using Ethernet. Have you
connected the computers' network cards to each other? If so, how?
Connecting them directly to each other, without a hub, switch, or
router, requires a crossover cable, which reverses the transmit and
receive wires between the ends. A regular Ethernet cable won't work.
