pictures with .dat format

I receive many pictures with the file extension .dat
If anyone could explain how (or whith what) to open
these files I would really appreciate it. My wife
tells me that everyone she knows just clicks on the
file and a picture comes up. I, however, get the message
"unknown file format" or "extension not registered."
