When doing a presentation on a projector(infocus) some of the pictures
appear to looke watercolored. Some look alright. Does it matter if a picture
is .bmp, .jpg . Do they have to be a specific type. Is there a setting in
powerpoint in reference to how a picture is projected. On the slide it seems
alright?
thanks

Bruce,

The image type should not affect it unless PowerPoint itself is having
trouble displaying it. Have you checked you have the latest video drivers,
and latest version of DirectX? Also, I once saw this happen to all images
with a faulty cable, but it wouldn't affect only some images.

Using a projector to display a presentation is vastly different than using a
computer monitor. It is just a matter of the technology. There are also many
factors; front or rear projection, room lighting, type of projector, etc.

Basically, projectors tend to have a hard time with reds (they turn pink and
washed out), and what also "blow out" the contrast on images. The problem is
most likely that some images have greater contrast than others. Those with
greater contrast are going to display better than those without.

I'm not sure how we could define "appear to look water colored" so we were
all picturing the same thing. But because you note that it is only some
images that look poorly, I'll rule out any technical issues (cables, refresh
rates, etc.) and assume it is the images themselves. Try this, in PPT select
one of the watercolored images. Using the contrast and brightness buttons
adjust the image (it may look poorly on computer monitor) and check how it
looks when projected. Any improvement?

There is no formula to make all images appear perfect. There are just to
many variables. But you certainly can adjust them so they do project better,
usually with lots of trial and error.

If your "pictures" are drawings which are supposed to have clear edges, the
file format may affect the display. PPT uses so-called anti-aliasing which
makes lines look softer, not jagged. This anti-aliasing is not applied to
EMF and not fully applied to WMF, so they might look crisper than JPG or
GIF. But WMF or EMF will not make a difference if your pictures are photos,
for those JPG or PNG are most suitable. And file format should not have any
effect on brightness of colors.

Kind regards,
Ute
