Pictures in PowerPoint

Does anybody know how to insert into PowerPoint a picture
from Picture It or other software, contained within a
shape (like a star)? The problem with Picture It is that
it may insert the picture into a shape, but it leaves a
white square background.
 
Do you need to use Picture It? Reason I ask is because this is built into
PowerPoint via the Autoshapes. Just select your shape and set the background
to the picture you want to use. If you want a detailed look at what you can

You need to save the image as a .png or .tif which allow an
alpha/transparent channel. I am uncertain if Picture It supports those
