Using PPT2002
I have some some MS Project gantt charts inserted into a ppt presentation as
gif files. They are also linked.
When the project data changes I create a new gif of the gantt chart. Here
is the problem.

When I open the ppt file I get the message to update the links (I also have
some Excel files linked).
I select "Update" and the Excel files update just fine. However, the gif
files are not changed.
Is there a way to update those without reinserting them individually?

Thanks
Glen

Are you certain that you linked them? By default they are embedded. I ask
because you mention that you inserted them and that they are *also* linked.

Hi Glen,
Maybe I can help you. Look at www.take-off.as/datapoint
With that tool you can link a powerpoint presentation directly to a ms
project (mpp) file to retrieve data from it. Then you can design your graphs
directly with MS graph in powerpoint and link it to the mpp data.

Honestly I don't know if you can create gantt charts with MS graph, but
maybe there some other graph types to help you out.

Good luck
Kurt.

Sonia,
If I - Insert, Object, From File, and select the gif file I want and check
the box that says link - I get an error message that says
"It isn't possible to create a link to c:\mypath\myfile.gif"

If I insert, Picture, From File, and then select myfile.gif, it inserts the
picture. I can then right click the mouse and select "Hyperlink" and create
the link. However, nothing happens when I change the gif file (I recreate
the gif file with some changes and save it as the same name).

Any clue?

Glen

Try this:

Insert > Picture > Picture from File and check the box to link the image.
In PowerPoint 97 there is actually a box to check. In later versions you'll
need to click on the little arrow head on the "Insert" button and select
Link.

Now your image will be linked and will refresh when you open the
presentation in PowerPoint.

Sonia,
I never noticed the small arrow next to "Insert." I think I will be a
dective when I grow up :-)
Thanks. Than works great!

Great. Now, to explain what you were originally doing. You said:

"If I insert, Picture, From File, and then select myfile.gif, it inserts the
picture. I can then right click the mouse and select "Hyperlink" and create
the link. However, nothing happens when I change the gif file (I recreate
the gif file with some changes and save it as the same name)."

That created a static image that was hyperlinked to the same image file
name. In order to see the new/latest version of the image you would need to
click on the hyperlinked old version of the image and the new version would
be displayed in the default application for GIF's (not PowerPoint ). The
old version would always be displayed on the slide in PowerPoint.
