Picture It Abnormal Program Termination

I don't know if anyone can help on this one, since this is old software...but
I had been running Works 2002 on an old XP Home system, and when it died,
moved the software over to a new Dell Vostro 220S XP Pro system...

When I try to run Picture It (6.0.829.0), it loads, but when I try to view a
jpg file, I get an error message, with the window headed as "Microsoft Visual
C++ Runtime Library" referencing program:c\progra~1\MI5310~1\pip.exe abnormal
program termination."

So, is this a bad install which might be corrected by uninstall and
reinstall, or something else?

Thanks so much for any help!

This usually refers to an issue
with too much RAM.

The patch is available from

Thanks for trying to help with this.

I note that this patch is supposed to work on picore6.dll...but I don't see
it in my system...I think maybe I should just uninstall and reinstall...maybe
it was just somehow a defective installation?

Wow, too much RAM? That is something I could NEVER have imagined being a
problem!

If the issue is caused by RAM in excess
of 850MB (don't forget...you are running
an 8 year old app)...the patch is the only
existing fix. Reinstalling PI2002 will not
correct the issue.

You were right on target, that DID fix the problem...it never ceases to amaze
me that there is always something new to be learned, I figured that Picture
It ran OK on the old Dell Dimension running XP Home, surely it would run
equally well on a Dell Vostro running XP Pro...again, I have never heard of a
situation in which too much ram was a problem.

Now I have to figure out how to handle the monitor settings, since Picture
It! recommends 800x600 with true colors, but I only see 8, 16 and 32 color
options...

As I said, it never ends...

<g>

Again, thanks so much for the great fix.

You're welcome.

Thanks for the update.

It would be a good idea to save a copy of
the patch for future use...it's possible that
MS may discontinue it's availability.

BTW...if you move to Vista...PI2002 will
not run on it.

My monitor (WinXP Pro) is set as follows.

Screen Resolution - 1024x768
Color Quality - Highest 32 bit

Hi again...yes, I have my monitor set in similar fashion...not sure why
Picture It wanted the other settings, but I told it to stop reminding
me...only downside is the the program runs now with a grainy background, but
I can live with that.

Thanks for the warning about Vista...I am not surprised...that's why I
replaced the old Dell Dimension with a Vostro loaded with XP Pro, I will not
take advantage of the included Vista Business license. My wife has Vista
Premium on her system, and even with only basic program installations, it has
required a good amount of tweaking....though I guess I really have to blame
Zone Alarm for some of her problems...

Once again, your help is immensely appreciated.

And of course, I have the patch stored on an external drive in case I have
to go thru this again.

The dialog you quote about 600x800 for
PI2002 is unusual. If PI2002 is running
with a grainy appearance I would wonder
if you may need to upgrade your video driver.

Just wondering...are you using the ClearType
option?

I think I discovered why the screen is so degraded...when I run Picture It!,
my monitor goes blank, and then resumes at 1024 x 768 but at 8 bit
color...then, when I close it, the monitor blanks again and goes back to the
1024 x 768 and 32 bit color...I can live with the weirdness as long as the
printer provides what I need, but any chance you can explain this too?

Hope I have not worn you out with followup questions!

Thanks again so much either way.

Not worn out yet :o)

As I previously suggested...you may
need to update your video driver.

Go to the support website of your video
adapter's mfg. and search for Windows
XP Compatible drivers.

If you don't know the make and model of
your video adapter...check the documentation
that came with the computer.

Also you could try these steps...
Go to...Start / Run...type...
msinfo32 ...press enter.

On the System Information screen...choose...
Components / Display...

You should find the make and model of your
display adapter as well as the driver version.

If the driver on the support website is more
current than the one you are running...
download it and install it. Also you should find
and follow the installation instructions at the
support site.

Hi John,

msinfo32 was a new one for me, never tried that before, alot of information
there above and beyond Device Manager!

Well, it shows the Video card (probably integrated, this is not a high end
system) to be an Intel (R) G45/G43 Express Chipset...since this is a brand
new system, I am not surprised that Windows tells me there are no newer
drivers available for this...so, unless you have more tricks up your sleeve,
I may be at a point that is, as they say, as good as it's going to get...I am
truly thankful that the Picture It! software runs, even if imperfectly!

Thanks again for all the help.

Being new is no guarantee that your

Well, I did not want to leave your last suggestion unanswered...and of
course, again preface this by thanking you for your willingness to try to
help me get to the root of this annoying, but tolerable situation...at least
Picture It! works!

Anyway, I did install the driver update, and same situation, loading the
program causes the video settings to revert from 1024 x 768 32 bit to 800 x
600 8 bit, and closing the program is followed by the blank screen and
resumption of the initial settings.

Guess it's not a matter of principle to understand what's going on...but if
this cannot be solved, I can live with it.

Heaven forbid I'd have to just buckle down and start using different
software for those cd covers I used to create with Picture It!

<g>

Thanks yet again, Peter

Sorry...but I'm all out of ideas.

The issue you describe is one I've never
seen or heard of before and I've been
fielding Picture It! questions since 2000.

The latest and last version of MS Picture
It! / MS Digital Image software was...
"MS Digital Image Suite 2006 Anniversary
Edition"...it may be worth your time to see
if you can find a copy somewhere like Amazon
or eBay because it will be compatible with
all your PI 2002 .png-plus project files.
And...it is fully compatible with Vista.

If you would like to give it a test drive, there
is still a 60 day trial version available for
download:

Microsoft Digital Image
Starter Edition 2006
http://tinyurl.com/28loxr
or...
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...ED-A15F-48C5-B724-7796FE8C151E&displaylang=en
(this product line has been
discontinued but you can still
download the Starter Version
and run it for 60 days)

Unlike the retail version...the trial does not
have the ability to create VCDs and it does
not include the clipart and pre-formatted
projects.

There's the same problem with MS Picture it! 2002 from the MS Works Suite 2002, not the MS Office version.
I'm using it on Win7 Ulti 64 Bits and it does this error very often, I tried to install this update but it says my version of the program is different.
Is there any way to fix this error for my version of Picture it?

Thnx in advance! :D

Hi John,
you seem to be "the Man" for Picture It issues.
Like so may I've found on forums everywhere I love this program.

I run XP Home with SP3 with 3Gb of RAM and have had no issues with PI2002... till now.
I have the patch PI9299 and decided to add 1 more Gb of RAM but PIP2002 just would not open files or edit anything (program would open but not save anything nor open photos etc)

I've gone back to the old 3GB RAM configuration, and I've even un-instal/re-installed PIP but it just locks when I try to open a file or a photo.

I know this program is considered ancient history by Microsoft but all my business graphics are n this great program.

Any ideas to check, have there been any Windows updates that might have upset it in the past week, any other pacthes you can suggest or any other program that can open PNG files and see the layers like in PIP2002 so I could edit old PNG files?

Grateful for any help you can give me
Mark
