What can be the reason that sometimes a picture is not shown by IE 6, SP1?
I see only the placeholders and a red cross in the upper left corner.
Clicking on 'show
picture' doesn't help and clicking on 'properties' does not reveal the file
type.
The phenomenon must have something to do with graphics that are generated by
a script. A good example is: www.marinasnordadria.com/norme_maree.php#C .
This Italian site gives tide predictions for a number of harbours in the
Adriatic sea, if you click on 'Vai' a tide graph is shown for the port of
Ancona for today. With earlier IE versions I could see the picture, now it
is an empty window.

Have you contacted the webmaster with your question? The webmaster can
tell you if there is a problem on their side of the connection. It has
nothing to do with Internet Explorer per se.

There are many possible causes and solutions.
Try the quick, easy fix first. Clear the IE cache from IE> Tools> Internet
Options> General> Delete files and Delete offline content. Reset the TIF
folder size to about 50MB (Settings button) and clear it occasionally.

Also, go to Start | Run and type
regsvr32 /i mshtml
and press OK.

Are you using a Firewall or "filtering software"?

Several of these are known to cause problems:
1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]
Reset "Ad Blocking" and "Cookie Control" to "medium"
"Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS)[Enable Browser Privacy - enabled]
Active Content - "Allow All Script To Execute"
Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128 bit encryption
Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referrer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.

5) Cookie blocking software that are blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers that are stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) Make sure the following registry entry is not corrupt:

Please do me a favour and follow the link I mentioned in my post. Do you get
a graph or only placeholders? I have no blockers, firewalls etc. installed,
just IE6 with all settings default. I also followed the advice from
redx.htlm, am still working my way thru the microsoft support pages.

I get no graphs or place holders in IE6 or IE7.
I get a table with six columns starting with "Localita", A heading "GRAFICI
DELLE MAREE ASTRONOMICA DI TRIESTE" with seven columns including four
months, and a heading "GRAFICI GIORNALIERI MAREE PER LOCALITA'" with
nothing.

if you click on 'Vai' a tide graph is shown for the port of Ancona for today.

http://www.marinasnordadria.com/norme_maree.php?i=20061207&f=20061207&p=Ancona,+Italy&s=1:0

FiddlerTool shows the site is returning 0 bytes for this request.

IE shows a Red-X in this case because there is nothing to render.

I also tried changing the dates in the request to 20061206 in case
there is only a problem with today's date but that modified request
also returned 0 bytes.

It's possible that the site is only serving IP addresses for certain domains,
etc.

My assumption that IE6 was the cause, you proved to be wrong. Thank you for
clearing that up. I saved the page and looked at the html with Frontpage.
They get their data from another site (University of Trieste) where they
used to do tide calculations for a number of ports but that service was
discontinuied a little over a year ago. Appearantly nobody ever complained
about the empty placeholders or maybe I am the only one interested in tide
predictions.
