Picture files grouping

I want to be able to have one and only one copy of a picture. But I also want
the picture to belong to different groups. For instance the same picture can
belong to “2007-June-vacationâ€, “Beach-landscapesâ€, and “Nancy-nieceâ€, etc.
It could conceivably belong to many more than three groups.
I will be very thankful for advice to resolve this issue. I realize that
there are many more than one correct answer, so all suggestions will be
welcome.

Thank you in advance for your valuable help.

Are you running Windows XP?

What software are you using to
tag your image collection?

Maybe the following info about
Picasa will offer some ideas:

Thank you very much.
I am going to try Picasa. Yes, I am using Windows XP and so far I have been
using Windows Explorer and Office Picture Manager. I am sure that there are
several better ways and I am willing to experiment to find a very efficient
wway of filing pictures.
Again, Thank you very much.

For working in Windows Explorer...I guess you
are aware that you can add keywords to .jpg files
by right clicking and go to...Properties / Summary
tab / Advanced button. This can be done in a batch
also. And...the keywords are searchable.

Appols for butting in:

Are there 'standard' keywords and categories (I can never even decide what
is a keyword and what is a category!) so that one can ensure consistency in
describing pictures from one editing session to the next? Better still, is
there a way to set up a tick box or drop down list for assigning key words
and categories? It sounds like a simple exercise to add key words, but, in
practice, I find that having to summon up the necessary memory and or
inspiration for each picture, rather puts me off doing it at all. Still,
perhaps, in the future, Google will get good enough to recognise the
subjects in our pictures and index them along with all the rest of our
files...

Maybe some library type software would
be useful to you.

It's always important to create a system restore
point before installing new software or updates.

Adobe PhotoShop Elements may be worth a look:

Here's another option...originally included
with the Vista OS...now there's a version
that will run on Vista and WinXP SP2.

Windows Live Photo Gallery Beta
http://get.live.com/betas/photogallery_betas
(if you download this app...pay close attention
during the install and uncheck anything you do
not wish installed on your system)

Windows Live Photo Gallery
2008 Beta Build 12.0.1193.815

And there's a 60 day trial version of MS Digital
Image Suite available for download if you would
like to give it a try:

Microsoft Digital Image

That's plenty to be going on with. Thanks John.

As it happens, I do have Photoshop Elements, but had not looked into much
other than the editing options. As each bit of equipment I buy seems to
come with a lot of such extras [PE having come with my graphics tablet along
with other programmes and no indication as to what they were all for! (I
now notice that one of them is called Arc Soft PhotoBase: know anything
about that?], I've tended to ignore the lot of them, wishing there was one
standard utility, and tending to just use XP's 'properties' sheets,
Explorers filing, Photo Editor, and Picture and Fax Viewer . Perhaps the
new Live Photo Gallery is aiming to be the one stop solution to all this?

Looks like I have some reading to do.

Cheers,

I think they all want to be the "One Stop Solution" but
it really depends on what the individual user is seeking.

The issue that continues to bug me is that most of the
library type software has a proprietary database
where some of the data is stored. The problem with
this is that if you ever move to a different software...
you may lose some of the work you have done because
the new software cannot read the old database.

The following article explains that in certain cases...
data that cannot be written back to the original file will
be written to the Photo Gallery database.

Metadata and the Windows
Vista Photo Gallery

For example in Windows XP...the Windows Live
PhotoGallery data base file is...Pictures.pd4...and is
stored at:

C:\Documents and Settings\>user name<\Local Settings\
Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Photo Gallery\
Pictures.pd4
