Picasa 2 and your default browser

Q. The Picasa 2 system requirements state that you need to have Internet
Explorer. I use a different browser. What can I do?

A. You do not have to set Internet Explorer as your default browser to
use Picasa 2. You must have Internet Explorer installed for Picasa to
install and run smoothly. Most operations in Picasa 2 that call for a
web browser will still bring up your default web browser, whether you
are using Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, or Opera.

=================================
Zo;

We use Mozilla exclusively and we've been using Picasa2 since its
release for it's photo-filing & -editing abilities. However, IE is
still on our systems. I don't know what OS you're using, but for my
Win2k and XP clients, it would be quite a bother indeed to "uninstall" IE.

Especially since M$ went out of their way to make it an integral part of
the overall OS.

Picasa2 seems to really need IE when used in conjunction with "Hello," a
blog-thingy with which I have no experience.

My default browser is FireFox and Picasa2 works fine.

once again, i really *really like this software. however, it doesn't
work on my system anymore. the process starts but the program won't
appear (usually). and when it *does appear at all, i get the program's
main body and the splash screen, but then it just sits there. has
anyone else had a problem like this with picasa?

the only thing i can think of is that it doesn't want to play well
with a local dns i have set up on my system after installing picasa.
it is called 'tree walk'. the reason i think that may be the problem
is that picasa does (or tries to do) a ton of phoning home and mayhaps
tree walk or possibly even the firewall i now use (sygate personal)
get in its way.

if nothing else, can anyone recommend a similar program to picasa that
might work for me? tia!

I skimmed the review - FotoAlbum is similar. It does not have a
photoeditor (you associate your preferred editor and access it from
FotoAlbum's right click menu.)

I use FotoAlbum and like it - a lot. FYI - it has a good help file.

if not babya ;-) google and try IrfanView (one of the previous versions
should be freeware) and/or ACDsee (last one is payware!).

Biff;

I wrote up more details below but, bottom line is that Picasa2 d/n seem
to attempt internet contact since I unchecked that option in
tools->options->general.

My installation works fine:

Picasa2
Clamwin
Zone Alarm
Win2k SP4
SMC firewall/router/dns

Initially, I'd set Zone Alarm such that Picasa2 would need get
permission each time it tries to access the internet. Two things:

1) it did this every session
2) the request to access the net varies from w/in first minute to 5 minutes

After about a week, I un-checked the "connect to internet for updates"
option in Picasa2. No attempts at access reported by Zone Alarm since then.

Tried contacting some kind of support? They have Google's money behind
them so maybe there will be intertest / help.

well, i wish i could tell youe xaclty what all it seemed to want to
connect to, but i have uninstalled it since i couldn't get it to work
and have since forgotten where it was trying to connect to. i believe
it was just various google-based sites, which is really no big deal to
me. i was trying to allow it access to whatever it wanted to connect
to, but for some reason it would still hang and never fully load.

i am fairly certain it was having trouble getting along with my local
dns setup, but i'm not going to be getting rid of it any time soon so
i guess no picasa for me. :(

thanks for responding!

susan, thanks for the tip. i installed fotoalbum and its pretty cool,
but its still just not as slick and fun to use as picasa. there were
some pretty sweet aspects of that program and am kinda bummed i can't
run it now due to whatever reason on my local system.

thanks again!

i was able to successfully install and run picasa 2 by simply
disabling my firewall (sygate) during picasa's first run after
installing. i then disabled the option to check for updates, and all
seems fine. :)

thanks to all who responded to my query regarding this.

The best way I know of to debug software is to keep track of what I do
and what it does; especially when I first install it. That way you have
a trail to follow. I keep a steno pad next to my keyboard and record
everything I do to "the system", such as install/uninstall software, set
restore points, change settings, etc. I also record "glitches" when
they occur. This has proven invaluable for me to keep my box running
smoothly.

YW. I was glad to see you got Picasa working on your machine.
now picasa has gone back to its behaviour of loading the picasa
process, eating 30mb of ram, and not loading its gui - even if i
disable my firewall. time to just nuke it and give up i guess...
